What does it mean to have a medically fragile child?
Our parents are going beyond typical caregiving, by raising children that are not only differently abled, but medically fragile as well. This can mean that caregivers are managing medical technology in the home that allows their child to breathe, eat, and move, as well as frequent medication schedules, various medical interventions, and multiple appointments with medical specialists. These children often require surgeries or other procedures that mean that families spend frequent time at the hospital or children’s specialty centers. Parents must become caregivers with truly specialized knowledge.
